About the Project

Vietnamese refugee narratives serve as reminders of our community’s resilience and strength. It is important to retain these experiences to remind us of the cultural roots and history that make up our identities. By speaking to our families, we can learn about our past and pass these stories down from generation to generation. Although it may be hard to open up about these experiences, we can start by talking about it at the dinner table. 

The Vietnamese family dinner is usually the heart of the family; where everyone comes together after a long day to share a meal. Everyone is expected to contribute to the dinner, from food prep, cooking, to setting up and clearing the table. For many families, this time is also about cultural retention – how do we pass along our family history and traditions through our meals at the dinner table? The Cơm Gia Đình project aims to connect our family recipes to the refugee and immigrant stories of our families. 

During our 2018 Black April Commemoration, VAR collected a few family recipes along with the family’s refugee and immigration stories. This year, we would like to expand this project to compile these narratives into a published community recipe book, which will be published at the end of Summer 2023.

To share your family’s recipe, fill out the submission form linked below. Submissions can be in either English of Vietnamese. All submissions will be entered into a raffle for a VAR swag bag. Submissions used will be provided with a $50 gift card and a copy of the final product! You will receive an email from us if your recipe is chosen for the book. The last day for submissions will be June 2, 2023.

Bữa ăn tồi của gia đình Việt Nam tạo cơ hội đặt biệt để cả nhà tù họp, ăn uống với nhau sau một ngày đi học và làm. Ai ai cũng có vai trò sắp xếp bữa ăn tối: đi chợ mua những nguyên liệu và nấu ăn đến dọn bàn. Đây cũng là cơ hội để duy trì văn hoá và truyền thống - Sao mà gia đình có thể dùng bữa ăn tối để kể lại những câu chuyện ngày xưa?

Trong ngày chương trình Tháng Tư Đen năm 2018, VAR đã thu tập vài công thức nấu ăn và câu chuyện vượt biên/di cư từ cộng đồng. Năm nay, VAR muốn thu thêm công thức và câu chuyện để làm và in cuốn sách công thức, gọi là Cơm Gia Đình.

Để tham gia, xin vui lòng điền vào submission form này. Quý vị sẽ nhận được email nếu VAR chọn công thức của quý vị. Mọi người điền vào form sẽ có tên trong raffle để nhận được qua. Những ai được chọn để đăng công thức sẽ được $50 gift card và một cuốn sách Cơm Gia Đình. Ngày cuối để nộp công thúc là ngày 2 tháng 6.
